A Significant Occasion as Rosenior Shatters Barriers

"He is a top tactician that understands football intimately, and that's what matters most.

"However, as the Blues' first black player, it would be dishonest if I said this appointment doesn't move me."

These were the words expressed by the former Chelsea winger, the man who made his groundbreaking debut for the Blues' first team as a substitute in April 1982.

On Tuesday, the club named RC Strasbourg boss Liam Rosenior, 41, as their new head coach following the exit of Enzo Maresca.

Strasbourg are part of the multi-club BlueCo that also controls the London club.

There have been only 12 of African or Caribbean heritage managers – not including individuals in temporary caretaker roles – in the Premier League since its inception thirty-four in the past.

"One thing that impresses me regarding Rosenior is he grew up and played locally, he understands this community," added Canoville.

"When kids see someone like Liam in charge of their club, a person who looks like them, who's from their ends, from a family that champions equality… it is profound and shows them that opportunities exist.

"Indeed, this represents a huge step for the club, for the capital, for all aspiring individual dreaming big.

"But right now? We must support Rosenior, give him the necessary tools, and allow him to get on with the job."

What Do the Data Reveal?

The iconic Dutchman Ruud Gullit was appointed the Blues' manager back in the nineties thereby becoming the Premier League's inaugural African heritage head coach.

Twelve years later, in 2008, Paul Ince was appointed as the pioneering English black manager in the top flight when he took over Blackburn Rovers.

The Hammers' manager Nuno Espirito Santo currently stands as the only other present Premier League boss of colour.

The lack of ethnic minority managers throughout the English game is matched by an absence of diversity in the boardroom.

As per the Black Footballers Partnership 2023 report, forty-three percent of top-flight footballers come from African or Caribbean backgrounds.

Yet, research from the equality organization found just 3.2 percent of executive and leadership management teams at most Premier League clubs are from ethnically diverse communities.

Regarding first-team coaching level, based on data provided by 11 clubs, the figure is 2%.

For all coaching positions – encompassing senior roles – from those same 11 clubs, the statistic is just 5%.

"He has undoubtedly made history by virtue of his appointment as a the Chelsea head coach, and as an organization, we want to witness more such appointments," stated Kick It Out CEO Samuel Okafor.

"We know that there exists loads of talent that exists in the ethnic minority communities... aspiring coaches desire the opportunity to demonstrate their capabilities. We need to continue to striving to dismantle those obstacles down."

Furthermore, Rosenior will become the fourth full-time English managers presently managing in the top flight – alongside Sean Dyche, Eddie Howe and Scott Parker – which lags behind Europe's remaining big five leagues regarding homegrown managers.

16 of the 20 first division managers in Italy are Italian, 11 in La Liga in Spain, 12 of the 18 are German while Ten of the 18 in France.

Current Chelsea interim boss Calum McFarlane said: "I have no doubt every young English coaches from an academy background are, to some degree regardless of allegiance, rooting for Liam.

"It is really inspirational to young English academy coaches to witness someone land such a role with that profile and we hope he will be highly successful."

It is vital to remember – his appointment is based on talent'

His father, Leroy, Liam's father, played for clubs such as Fulham, West Ham as well as Queens Park Rangers, and his coaching stint culminating in a five-month spell at then-League One side Brentford back in 2006.

In 2019, he was awarded a Member of the Order of the British Empire in the 2019 New Year Honours for his services to tackling discrimination in football and wider society.

After Liam hung up his boots he pursued a path in management. He began penning articles for a national newspaper, and in one piece he addressed the under-representation of black coaches. He highlighted that race does not influence coaching skill arguing that roles should be given based on qualification.

He further expressed a point he would repeat: how vast under-representation results in a failure to understand regarding footballers from different ethnic and cultural backgrounds.

During an interview with The Athletic FC, he explained how his leading forward, Emmanuel Emegha, had been described as "hard to manage" and "passionate", noting that he could relate to the Netherlands international of Nigerian descent. Emegha is set to follow him with a move from France to Chelsea this summer.

In subsequent newspaper articles, Rosenior also admitted he was "embarrassed" to hear an unnamed staff member make a homophobic slur. He vowed his support for the Premier League's inclusion initiative and authored a public message to Donald Trump during his first US presidency, accusing him of "overt" racism.

He has subsequently built his reputation as a manager – initially with Hull City, then Strasbourg – and Wayne Rooney recently stating Rosenior was "among the best coaches I've ever worked with" following their time together with Derby.

Rosenior said goodbye to his former club earlier this week before signing a six‑and‑a‑half‑year contract at Chelsea.

The Blues had the top flight's pioneering black manager with Gullit as well as the first black captain named Paul Elliott.
